PhotonLab, Inc.
PhotonLab's proven, patented, and scalable ABALONE photosensor technology has the potential to revolutionize large area radiation detection.
The key to success of the ABALONE technology lies in the simple and efficient design. Comprised of only 3 glass components and thin film metal deposits, ABALONE photosensors are suited for economical mass production. This breakthrough technology allows for a projected tenfold cost reduction, superior performance, and durability.
About Us
PhotonLab, Inc. was founded by UC Davis Professor, Daniel Ferenc who has developed a novel photosensor technology and a family of products under the brand ABALONE in the field of light detection and radiation monitoring. Being a frustrated end user of conventional radiation detection technology(Photomultiplier Tubes), Professor Ferenc developed ABALONE technology, a modern, more reliable, cost effective, and scalable solution.
- Located in Davis Ca, occupying 1500 sq ft office/lab space
- S-Corporation
- 100% privately owned by professor Daniel Ferenc and Marija Segedin Ferenc.
- Received Over $1M funding from DOE and NSF SBIR Program
- Patents are secured exclusively with PhotonLab and some jointly with UC Davis
The Problem:
Today’s $2.3 billion Radiation Detection Market relies either on pre-WWII Photomultiplier Tube (PMT) Technology or very expensive Semiconductor Silicon PM Detectors (Si-PM). The inherently complex and labor intensive PMT manufacturing process has prevented evolution into modern, economical mass production, making large area radiation detectors prohibitively expensive for the needs of modern customers.

The Solution:
The key to success of PhotonLab's ABALONE technology lies in the simple and efficient design. Comprised of only glass components and thin film metal deposits, ABALONE photosensors are inherently better suited for economical mass production. This breakthrough technology allows for a >10x cost reduction, superior performance, & durability compared to the competition. PhotonLab's proven, patented, and scalable ABALONE photosensors have the potential to revolutionize large area radiation detection. Ultimately, PhotonLab's breakthrough novel technology can open new horizons in all areas, including large experiments in fundamental science, as well as new types of scanners for both functional medical imaging and nuclear security.
